Interdisciplinary Master’s Studies Officially Established in Lithuania

In 2025, one of the strategic objectives of the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC) was to prepare the Description of the Interdisciplinary Study Field. The final version of the Description was approved last week by Raminta Popovienė, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania.

The Description of the Interdisciplinary Study Field creates the conditions for Lithuanian higher education institutions to develop a new type of Master’s study programmes that integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines. It also expands opportunities for cooperation between universities of different profiles in Lithuania and with international partners, enabling the provision of more flexible study programmes that address contemporary societal challenges.

Interdisciplinary studies are defined as studies integrating two or more study fields, aimed at solving complex problems and responding to the needs of modern society and the labour market. These studies combine different perspectives, theories, methods and technologies in pursuit of innovative solutions.

This represents an important step in the development of the higher education system and a significant contribution to strengthening innovation in studies in Lithuania. The Description defines the key characteristics of interdisciplinary study programmes:

  • integrity, ensuring that study fields are consistently integrated across programme objectives, content, methods, and learning outcomes;
  • coherence of results, ensuring alignment between all elements of the programme;
  • orientation towards complex problem-solving, based on an interdisciplinary approach.

The Description of the Interdisciplinary Study Field was developed in cooperation with universities, colleges, student representatives, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. The document was prepared by an inter-institutional working group, coordinated by SKVC.
