How Micro‑Credentials Could Shape the Future of Education
On 19 February 2026, SKVC hosted the event “Discussion of the Essential Elements of the Micro‑Credentials Model in Higher Education” as part of the project “Development of the Possibilities of Recognition and Assessment of the Competences Acquired by a Person (PRI(SI)PAŽINK)” (No. 10‑027‑P‑0001).
The event brought together representatives from the Qualifications and Vocational Education and Training Development Centre (KPMPC), various higher education institutions, the Lithuanian Students’ Union, and the Vilnius University Students’ Representation. In total, around 50 participants took part, actively engaging in discussions and sharing practical experience gained within European University Alliances where micro‑credentials are already being developed and implemented. Presentations were delivered by Aurelija Valeikienė, Deputy Director of SKVC, Kristina Sutkutė, Head of the Institutional Review Division at SKVC, and members of working groups who had examined the relevant topics. The event also highlighted international practices and proposals relevant to Lithuania.
Discussions focused on identifying and clarifying the essential elements of the micro‑credentials model in Lithuania. Particular attention was given to the relationship between ECTS credits and the Lithuanian Qualifications Framework (LTKS), recognition approaches, matters related to registration and issuance, and the establishment of quality assurance principles. Participants shared institutional perspectives, highlighted current challenges, and explored possible solutions with the aim of reaching a shared understanding.
The insights gathered during the event will contribute to the further development of the PRI(SI)PAŽINK project. For micro‑credentials to effectively complement existing qualifications and become a sustainable part of the Lithuanian higher education system, a coherent and consistent framework is needed—one that ensures clarity, quality, flexibility, transparency, and reliable recognition across institutions.
